Pocono Northeast RC&D

The Pocono Northeast RC&D Council soon will reach its quarter century milestone of service to northeastern Pennsylvania. Beginning with seven counties in 1980, it has expanded to ten counties and now includes the majority of the anthracite coal region, the central Susquehanna Valley, and the entire Pocono Mountain Region. This diverse geography has resulted in a wide variety of projects focusing on natural resource conservation and sustainable development of the Area’s resources. The Council has had a significant impact on agriculture through numerous programs to promote grassland agriculture and grazing, solar power water pumping, precision agriculture demonstrations, on-farm composting, and most recently, electric power generation from methane produced by anaerobic digestion of animal wastes. Processing and utilization of several waste streams, including bio-solids, coal ash, and treatment facility residues has provided positive contributions to abandoned coal land restoration and water quality improvements. Through its numerous contacts with educational institutions throughout the region, the Council has been successful in facilitating research in such areas as measuring the rate of carbon sequestration, build up of soil organic through compost utilization, and livestock odor abatement through anaerobic digestion. These contacts plus others with scientific technical assistance providers have also resulted in an ongoing project to assist watershed and lake management organizations with water quality monitoring, organizational mentoring, and watershed study designs. All these projects plus dozens more have contributed to the RC&D Council’s success in promoting resource sustainability throughout the Pocono Northeast.
